How to Do Basic Math in GeoGebra

To start, you should familiarize yourself with the following symbols and terms:

Addition: +
Subtraction: -
Multiplication: * or space
Division: / or :
Exponents: ^ + <Exponent>
Square root: sqrt(<Number>)
$n$ th roots: nroot(<Number>, <n>)
An exact/symbolic value is a value given as a fraction or a root, with before it. An exact value can also be an integer.
A numeric value is a value given by a rounded decimal number, with before it.

Example 1

To compute $2^{3}$ , type 2^3.

To compute $\sqrt{4}$ , type sqrt(4).

To compute $\sqrt[3]{27}$ , type nroot(27, 3).

To compute $8 - 7 \cdot (2^{2} - \frac{3}{4})$ , type 8-7(2^2-3/4).

Example 2

To enter fractions in GeoGebra, use “/” or “:”. For example, $\frac{2}{3}$ is entered as 2/3.

If you have several terms or factors in the fraction, you must use parentheses around the numerator and the denominator. For example, to compute $\frac{2}{5 \cdot 3} = \frac{2}{15}$ , type

2/(5*3) or 2/(5 3)

If you type

2/5 * 3 or 2/5 3

then you get

\frac{2}{5} \cdot 3 = \frac{6}{5} \neq \frac{2}{15}
